The Giant's Causeway is not just a visitor attraction; it is a valuable educational facility that provides a wealth of learning experiences for pupils. We have three education programs here at the causeway, and all are supported by a workbook which the student takes back to the classroom.
“A large part of our work is explaining the importance and relevance of this site to generations of young people,” said Eleanor Killough, Learning Officer for the Giant’s Causeway. “We are truly fortunate to have a resource of this calibre on our doorstep.”
Our Giant Discoveries program is specially created for Early Years, KS1 and KS2 pupils. We offer two programs for KS3 students - Geology Rocks: Exploring the Giant's Causeway and The Giant's Causeway: Managing a World Heritage Site.
In 2013, we were awarded the Sandford Award for Heritage Education. These awards recognise quality and excellence in the educational services and facilities.
Explaining why the Giant’s Causeway received the award, lead judge Gareth Fitzpatrick, said: “The Giant’s Causeway is an iconic place and, correctly, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Schools can look forward to an experience that looks at geological activities that formed the landscape with the myths, legends and fables that formed a nation.”
